| ♦ Nathan Ford's Backstory | Nathan's Bio: An honest man in a dishonest world, Nathan Ford is the undisputed leader of the Leverage team. After a widely successful career as an insurance investigator for the prestigious IYS, Nate was heinously betrayed by the company, refusing to pay for his son Sam's treatment for a terminal illness, claiming it to be too experimental for them to cover. When Sam died, Nate fell into a downward spiral. His wife divorced him, and he soon found himself plagued by alcoholism and insomnia, until the day Victor Dubenech .approached him with an offer to good to refuse: leading a team of criminals to steal from one of IYS's clients for a salary of $600,000. Believing they were stealing plans that were stolen from his client, Nathan agreed. The team Dubenech put together was comprised of pro hacker Alec Hardison, retrieval specialist Eliot Spencer, and the mysterious female thief known only as Parker. Having chased all three in the past, Nathan's integrity and familiarity with the team made him the perfect choice to lead the raid. Despite an unexpected complication, Nate demonstrated his uncanny ability to formulate foolproof plans in seemingly hopeless situations. The next morning, Nate was awakened by an angry phone call from Dubenech, who claimed that the plans never came to him, and demanding that Nate meet him at an abandoned building he owned. When Nate got there, he found Hardison, Eliot, and Parker, and quickly realized that Dubenech had attempted to lure them to their deaths as the building exploded. After a narrow escape from Dubenech's death trap and the custody of the local police, Nathan went with the others to Hardison's apartment. Enraged by Dubenech using his son's death to enlist his services, he proposed an elaborate plan to get revenge on Dubenech. Enticed by the promises of monetary compensation and payback, the others agreed. In order to maintain the element of surprise Nate then recruited his old enemy, professional grifter and aspiring actress Sophie Devereaux. After Sophie joined the team, she helped Nate to trick Dubenech into accepting a bribe from Nigerian delegates, making him a prime target for the FBI, and freeing up the team to make off with a sigificant percentage of Dubenech's company's stock, earning the team a staggering amount of money while Dubenech rotted in incarceration. Realizing how well they worked together, the four thieves convinced Nathan to keep the team together. Nate agreed, hoping to use his and his new found allies' skills to help right the wrongs of corporate villains like the ones who allowed his son to die. Nate's career as an insurance investigator has given him invaluable knowledge and wisdom in dealing with criminals, including the ones he now works with. The other members of the team seem to respect Nate as "the honest man," placing their complete trust in him and carrying out his orders with optimum efficiency as only they can do. Always the man with the plan, no matter what the situation, Nate is always able to divine a way to solve any problem, even when the other team members have completely given up hope. It is interesting that, although they were once apparently bitter enemies, Sophie has become perhaps Nathan's closest friend since joining the Leverage team, even hinting toward possible romantic involvement in the near future. Only time will tell how their relationship will progress now that they have joined forces.
